We decided to test the Safavieh Courtyard Indoor and Outdoor Rug to see whether it would work with our outside area. How much would it withstand the elements—both the weather and backyard gathering kind? We’re talking about dewy morning, wet paw prints, and spilled wine. Material: Weather- and stain-resistant 

The Safavieh rug is composed of polypropylene, which is also known by the generic name of olefin. The same material that many technical outdoor base layer clothing is made out of because of its hydrophobic, or water-resistant, quality.

We tested it out on the back patio, using it to define a sitting area with an outdoor sofa, chairs, and a little table. We awoke to a lot of dew in the morning after rolling it out. While the outdoor sofa cushions and Adirondack chairs were damp enough that you couldn’t sit on the rug without toweling them off, the rug was barely moist at all, owing to the moisture-wicking, rapid-drying fiber.

The repulsion of moisture and the refusal to absorb dirt are both magical, and they are the sole reason we can enjoy outdoor rugs. The rug is also stain-resistant, so we didn’t have to worry about spilled juice or red wine as much as we would with a fiber carpet. This is due to the fact that the fibers are dyed solution-ly rather than after, resulting in no open dye sites where stains can attach. If exposed to the sun, the color won’t fade with time, making it perfect for an outdoor item.

The Safavieh Courtyard Indoor and Outdoor Rug comes in eight different colors, so you can choose whatever color works best with your patio furnishings. We tested the Natural/Cream version, which had a warm, honey-like sound that went well with the gray furnishings we used it with.

Texture: However, they are lightweight and have a pleasant feel

The Safavieh Courtyard Indoor and Outdoor Rug is made of machine-loomed fabric and has a finely woven, alternating texture that prevents it from becoming slippery. The weave also creates a subtle, elegant design with tonal variation. The rug we tried was a tan-colored checkerboard dot matrix with cream threads interwoven.

The rug is thin and lacks cushioning, yet it is quite soft underfoot. It almost felt like a step up from the bare brick since it was so smooth. The backing on the underside is more solid, and the manufacturer recommends using a rug pad to secure it. We didn’t feel the need for one since the rug was on a brick patio and was secured by furniture, but if we were to use it on a bare floor indoors, we’d want a rug pad to keep it in place. A rubberized rug pad would not only add cushioning, but it will also make the rug more comfortable to stand and walk on.

Cleaning and Maintenance: It’s simple to clean, but the most delicate fibers are easily disturbed. 

The convenience of a rug made to withstand outdoor elements is that it is considerably more simple to clean than traditional interior stuff. This is the reason why many parents choose to utilize an outdoor-rated carpet in the playroom rather than a cotton or wool fabric. 

When subjected to reality, did the rug clean up as expected? The quick answer is yes, but it also turned out to be significantly more delicate when it came to snagging and fraying from use and abuse and care.

We reside beneath oak trees, which have leaves that are somewhat scratchy. A broom might work well; however, leaves would occasionally get caught in the intricate pattern of the rug, requiring us to physically remove them by hand. Honestly, oak leaves have prickly edges, making this cleaning challenge very particular to them—most leaves will be swept away without effort. 

We used a cordless upright vacuum to clean tortilla chip crumbles and the like, and it worked flawlessly. The manufacturer does advise against using vacuuming with beater bars since the possibility of snagging those delicate top threads that our oak leaves adored clinging to is significant.

Other types of cleanups were also simple, thanks to the previously mentioned moisture- and stain-resistant material. In our experience, any spills or even small ones doused with a large glass of water were prevented from staining by hosing them down. The rug dries so fast that it’s not a problem to dampen a tiny area when you need to.

Durability: Not the best

Unfortunately, olefin rugs aren’t well-known for their longevity, and the weave pattern on this rug is the one weak point. The checkerboard design is made up of raised and flat woven squares, which alternate. On closer examination, the tiny threading on the raised squares appears visibly delicate, and it behaves that way as well; it’s prone to fraying and snagging and really doesn’t want to be touched.

Unfortunately, it only works for wall art and not area rugs. Based on our experience, we’d suggest putting the rug in a low-traffic area and treating it lightly. It also means avoiding any forceful rubbing with a cloth or sponge when cleaning and being cautious before moving furniture or potted plants on it.

Price: A budget-friendly option

The cost of a Safavieh rug is quite variable, ranging from under $20 for the smallest 2 x 3-foot size up to over $200 for the largest 9 x 12-foot size. The roughly 5 x 7-foot rug we got was priced at under $100, which seems to be an excellent price for the size and quality. It fulfills our expectations: It sets the parameters of the outside living area, and it is simple to clean. 

The rug’s adaptability adds to the price. We can conceive of taking the rug in and utilizing it in an entryway or playroom during the off-season or even converting a backyard she-shed.

We compared these two popular outdoor rugs’ quality, design, upkeep, and durability. Both are composed of polypropylene, which makes them resistant to weather and stains. We employed the Safavieh on the rear patio to anchor an outside living area and the Dash & Albert near the entranceway to create a pleasant sitting nook. Both rugs complemented the outside settings in an excellent way. However, there are a few distinctions that merit attention.

The sizes vary, but only the Safavieh rug comes in a circular design, which can be quite attractive if your area demands it. The Dash & Albert Diamond rug comes in 16 distinct colors, whereas the Safavieh rug comes in just eight. 

The Dash & Albert rug has a more solid, robust feel to it, perhaps owing to the fact that it is handcrafted from flat-woven yarn. It is softer and more similar to a typical indoor carpet than the Safavieh. 

Furthermore, there are two criteria that the customer should keep in mind: the performance and longevity of the two rugs. The Dash & Albert rug was much more resilient to cleaning, while the Safaveigh’s delicate raised weaving proved fragile to change and threadwork loosening. 

The Safavieh is by far the less expensive option, starting at around $20 for the smallest model and going up to about $200 for the biggest, whereas the Dash & Albert goes from about $50 to $1,500.

Final Verdict

It’s inexpensive, but it will need to be replaced eventually.
